When John was growing up, he had an affinity for pets. However, both his brother and sister were severely allergic to cats and dogs. So he had guinea pigs, gerbils and a pet rat instead. John had never been to a veterinary hospital, but when he was a junior in high school he read “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Herriot. After reading the book John said he was enthralled with the idea of being a veterinarian. He spent the next few years working in veterinary hospitals with both large and small animals. When John was asked why he became a veterinarian, he said “I focused my education on the biological sciences. I love leaning about biology, problem solving, working with people and working with animals. So veterinary medicine was a perfect fit, and still is.”

John acquired his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell in Ithaca. He also completed an internship for small animals at Oradell Animal Hospital in Oradell, New Jersey.

Dr. Reynolds has been with Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital for over 21 years. He said, “We currently have a fantastic team of people who all bring unique skills and personality traits to work every day that keeps it interesting.  Our veterinarian group works fantastically well together, pushing each other to learn new things, to keep our medical and surgical skills high and to work together to provide a high level of medicine and surgery to our patients.  Our facility is a lovely place to go to work every day – we get to enjoy the beauty of the Berkshires out our windows!” John has found a passion for managing the veterinary hospital and resort.  He enjoys the challenge of improving the patient and client experience that we offer, but at the same time, improve the efficiency of our team and our protocols.

Outside of work John relishes running on a regular basis and occasionally competing in 5K and ½ marathons. You can also find him kayaking in the Berkshires or the oceans, when he can get there. He loves to travel our country and to far distant lands, especially if there are icebergs involved. When John is at home he enjoys building rock walls, creating pastures for his barn critters, fixing fences, and settling down with his wife Val, and the dogs to watch a good movie.

John and Val arrived to the Berkshires in 1996 with one infant child in tow. Since then, two more daughters arrived, grew up, enjoyed the Berkshires and have fledged from the nest.  John said, “We are enjoying watching their adventures from our quieter empty nest in Richmond.”  The current “furry"Reynolds family includes Jemma, a mixed breed rat terrier and Crinky, a fawn Pug. They have occasional stays by their daughter Julia’s dog Einstein,a bizarre mix of terrier, short legs, lots of hair and crooked smile. Henry, the tailless cat, is their only mighty hunter.  Out in the barn is John Henry, a toy Shetland pony and Bea and Trixie, two Angora/pygmy goats.  Their big horse Sully, is currently off visiting another farm.
